4 Steps for Replacing Wood Shingles

So, you've made the decision to repair or replace the wood shingles on your roof. Congratulations on your bold decision! Please follow these useful steps to aid you in your project. Before you start, make sure you follow the safety precautions discussed here.

Step 1
Split the broken or cracked shingle into several pieces with a hammer and chisel.

Step 2
Measure the width of the space you need to fill and cut a new wood shingle approximately 3/8" narrower than your measurement.

Step 3
Gently tap the new shingle (use a tapping tool) into place until it hits the nails. Stop tapping when a dent appears in the nail. You will then need to measure how much further the shingle has to go to align with the other shingles on the roof. Pull the shingle out and cut slots equal to this measurement at each dent (use a utility knife or small saw to do this).

Step 4
Tap the shingle to within a 1/2 inch of the desired position. Then drive 2 shingle nails into the new shingle at a 45 Degree angle.

MAKE SURE TO FIND A PROFESSIONAL ROOFER IF YOU THINK YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE REPAIR YOURSELF.
